| Also, using the Mugglenet/TLC Interview with JKR, When asked if Snape was evil or not, she first asks Melissa and Emerson what they think. Melissa starts to say, "Well, there are conspiracy theorists, and there are people who will claim-" But JKR cuts her off and finishes, "Cling to some desperate hope!" And starts laughing. If Snape was innocent, why would she call it desperate hope? |

Right after finishing Book 7, I was drawn to rereading all of my HP accessory books (including Mugglenet's book, Galadriel Water's original Guide, etc.) and this book obviously. Particularly, I had to reread this essay based on the fact that we now know that Snape was only working for DD, and not both sides like I thought he was. I was struck by how the essay still holds water - you just have to change the parts where it says Snape was doing this or that for Voldy. Snape was clearly not teaching Harry how to actually perform Occlumency and further, was opening Harry's mind to VM, thus enabling the whole debacle at the DoM. The only difference is we now know Snape wasn't making the situation worse to assist his Dark Lord, he was doing it because he was a miserable, bitter little man who never stopped hating Harry with a passion. (As evidenced by one of the final pensieve scenes, DH - page 687, American Edition). Therefore, because of all his screwed up emotions, being in love with Lily most of his life, but hating James and Harry, Snape does unwittingly help VM achieve several of his goals. Big ones at that! After reading Chapter 33, "The Prince's Tale" a few times or so, the realization hit me that Snape wasn't just Voldemort's Pawn - as soon as he said to DD that he would do "anything" for DD in return for the Potters' safety, he became Dumbledore's Pawn, as well. And look where that got him! Having said all that, Snape was brave (loved DD's comment: "Sometimes I think we sort too soon...." DH - page 680, American Edition) and did an incredibly dangerous job that no one else could have done, and was one of the best/worst characters in the whole series. Congratulations to you, Stic, on being a little bit closer to the real Snape we finally saw in the Pensieve than some who still see him as a white knight in shining armor. The ending to the mystery of Snape was well worth being a little wrong about the whole loyalty to DD thing! |
